Construction Inspector

Job Description
This is technical work inspecting road and bridge construction projects in the Alachua County Department of Public Works.

This is an emergency essential classification. Upon declaration of a disaster and/or emergency, all employees in this classification are required to work.

An employee assigned to this classification will assist in the field verification of contractor’s survey and layout work involving the Public Works inspection of engineering construction projects to insure compliance with legal regulations and prescribed specifications.

Work is performed under the direction of a higher level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports and observation of results obtained.

Examples of Duties:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Exudes a positive customer service focus.

Advocates building organizational culture through aligning decisions with core values including: integrity, honesty, respect, diversity, innovation, accountability and communication.

Performs density verification testing on soils and obtains necessary samples for other road construction testing.

Coordinates and inspects roadway striping and striping maintenance.

Maintains bridge inspection files on inspections conducted by FDOT and coordinates correction of identified deficiencies.

Reviews residential driveway permits and inspects installation construction.

Provides roadway inventory data.

Drives a County vehicle and/or personal vehicle to work sites in order to perform job duties.

Performs paving and drainage inspection on commercial site developments.

Inspects paving and drainage construction in the County right-of-way, or on County contracted construction projects, in accordance with FDOT and design standards.

Reviews utility permits and inspects installation construction.

Assists in the performance of design, surveys, and construction layout.

Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of roadway and drainage construction and standards.

Knowledge of construction materials testing and sampling.

Ability to perform basic geometric and trigonometric calculations.

Ability to apply inspection techniques and achieve corrective action.

Ability to communicate with private citizens, contractors and engineers.

Ability to accurately record information and compile records in a timely manner.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment ranges from moderately noisy to very loud.

Hours:   40
Starting Pay:   $39,374.40 – $61,152.00 Annually

Minimum Requirements
Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of civil engineering, road design, survey, or road construction inspection experience; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. A valid State of Florida Driver’s License is required and a Motor Vehicle Record that meets the requirements of Alachua County policy # 6-7; Motor Vehicle Records will be reviewed prior to employment. If in the past 24-month period, the record shows more than 3 moving traffic violations, and/or a conviction/pending charge for driving under the influence, the minimum qualifications are not met for the position. Requires successful completion of a criminal history background investigation prior to employment.
