Position Description
St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking an HVAC Technician I for the Building Operations Division of our Facilities Management Department whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

Facilities Management provides comprehensive facilities services including property management and maintenance for all properties and buildings owned by the St. Johns Board of County Commissioners.

The Facilities Management Department provides the full spectrum of facility maintenance, operations and repair services for approximately 2 million square feet of County facilities. These properties range in purpose from recreational facilities and entertainment venues to public safety, general administrative offices and criminal justice facilities. The program’s goal is to ensure that County buildings and facilities reliably and efficiently perform the functions for which they were designed and constructed throughout their service life. In addition, the division performs in-house minor construction and renovation services.

The newly selected HVAC Technician I will be responsible for performing various maintenance and repair activities to HVAC systems primarily located at the Judicial & Administrative Campus and Service Center Annexes.

Examples of Duties

The ideal HVAC Technician I must possess St. Johns County’s core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and filter replacement on HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Assists HVAC journeyman and master technicians with the installation and repair of commercial and residential HVAC systems.
  • Monitors HVAC system operation and makes adjustments to HVAC automated controls to maintain temperature and humidity set points.
  • Maintains assigned tools, vehicles and equipment.
  • Follows established security and safety protocols while working at the Criminal Justice Facility and related Buildings.
  • Maintains a full-time presence on the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Candidates for the HVAC Technician I position are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Completion of a vocational training program for HVAC, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Must have held a full-time position as a HVAC technician, HVAC apprentice or HVAC helper for a minimum of one year.
  • Equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to thoroughly understand and perform the major duties of the position.
  • Certification as a HVAC Support Technician by the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.
