MECHANIC I – FLEET MAINTENANCE
St. Johns County Fleet Maintenance seeks a Mechanic I to be responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of county vehicles and equipment. Assists in troubleshooting and repairing brakes and air brake systems, HVAC systems, electrical systems, and coolant systems. Assists in the repair of engines and drive trains, suspensions, tires, exhaust systems, fuel systems and computerized components. Assists with minor body work. Test drives vehicles. Performs tune ups. Cleans and lubricates tools and equipment. Assists in rebuilding transmissions, pumps and differentials. Assists in the repair of gas and diesel engines. Maintains a clean and safe work area. Assists with front end alignments. Assists in the installation of safety lighting and light bars on vehicles. Completes work orders and performs other duties as assigned. Must have knowledge of departmental and county policies and procedures, including safety rules and regulations. Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair procedures. Knowledge of mechanical diagnostic procedures. Knowledge of the diagnosis and repair of mechanical, HVAC, hydraulic, electrical and brake systems. Knowledge of computers and job-related software. Must be skilled in the repair and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and motorized equipment. Skilled in the use of assigned tools and equipment and skilled in oral and written communication. Must have knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Must have sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Must provide personal hand tools. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position. Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others. Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language and must be able to operate a computer.
