The Groundskeeper I maintains assigned campus grounds to ensure the College environment remains clean, safe, and visually appealing for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position performs landscaping and grounds maintenance work using hand tools, power equipment, and College vehicles. Responsibilities include mowing, trimming, planting, debris removal, and assisting with campus maintenance projects.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain assigned Grounds areas including lawns, landscaping beds, walkways, and roadways.
  • Operate landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and tractors to maintain campus grounds.
  • Plant flowers, shrubs, and other vegetation and prepare soil for seasonal planting.
  • Remove weeds, trim hedges, prune plants, and maintain landscaped areas.
  • Perform litter patrol and remove trash and organic debris from assigned areas.
  • Assist with campus wide grounds projects and seasonal landscaping work.
  • Clear storm drains and assist with debris removal following heavy rain or storm events.
  • Use power tools to trim, edge, and maintain landscaping areas.
  • Assist with irrigation repairs, including trenching, piping, and installation of irrigation components.
  • Pressure wash walkways, walls, porches, and other campus surfaces while maintaining awareness of pedestrian safety.
  • Place safety cones and signage when performing work in high traffic areas.
  • Monitor grounds supplies and notify the supervisor when inventory is low.
  • Operate College trucks and utility carts to transport tools, debris, and equipment.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance checks on Ground’s equipment and vehicles.
  • Support event setup and other facilities related tasks as assigned.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •     Assist skilled trades staff with campus maintenance projects when needed.
  • Support campus operations by assisting with related facilities, custodial, or grounds tasks as assigned by the Grounds Supervisor or Manager.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 pounds multiple times per day.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and work above, around, and beneath equipment and structures.
  • Ability to safely operate landscaping equipment, power tools, and motorized vehicles.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate College trucks and utility carts.
  • Ability to obtain the Florida GIBMP Certification and Urban Fertilizer Applicator License as required.
  • Pass the College background process including motor vehicle check.
  • Demonstrated reliability with satisfactory attendance and work performance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior grounds keeping, landscaping, or outdoor maintenance experience.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions including heat, humidity, rain, and sun exposure.

  • Physical demands include:
  • Heavy Work -Lifting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally and 25 to 50 pounds frequently.
  •           O The physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
  • Frequent walking, climbing, crouching, and repetitive motions.
  • Operating power tools and equipment in outdoor environments.
  • Communicating effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and members of the campus   community.
