 Purpose of Classification     

The purpose of this classification is to perform semi-skilled maintenance work on various grounds, parks, streets, facilities, fleet, right-of-way, or stormwater systems for an assigned department of the city.  Employees in this classification perform duties that provide the city and the public with safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient areas in which to work, conduct business and/or enjoy leisure and recreation.  

 Minimum Qualifications

A.   Education and Experience:  High School diploma or equivalency diploma.

 B.    Certifications and Licenses:  Valid Drivers License with an acceptable driving record.

 C.    Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:  Skills in groundskeeping, custodial, maintenance activities, automotive and equipment repair.  Skills in the operation of hand tools and general maintenance practices and methods. Good physical condition and ability and willingness to perform required manual tasks.  

 Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

 1.    Performs semi-skilled maintenance on various grounds, parks, streets, facilities, right-of-way, or stormwater systems using proper techniques.

2.    Operates various tools and maintenance equipment as required in performance of job functions.

3.    Performs manual excavation duties, i.e., digging, raking, weeding.

4.    Performs maintenance operations using small engine equipment, i.e., operating mowers/chainsaws/weed eaters/tampers/small tractors.

5.    Ensures the safe operating conditions per work site, i.e. setting barricades, cones and signs’ monitoring and directing traffic.

6.    Uses a variety of handheld tools and equipment applicable to assigned work area, i.e. shovels, rakes, trowels, manual skill saws, and pipe cutters.

7.    Observes safe and proper operating procedures when operating trucks, equipment, machinery, and/or tools, in accordance with established policies and procedures.

8.    Assists with a variety of tasks such as minor repairs/services on city vehicles/equipment, pickup/deliver parts and delivery/transporting vehicles to various vendors.

9.    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.  

    Ability to safely operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.

    Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information.  

    Ability to work in team environment and communicate both verbally and in writing. 

    Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  May include counting, recording of counts, basic measuring, and monitoring/enforcing inventory control.

    Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.  

    Ability to exercise independent judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties.

    Ability to comply with OSHA safety standards and health rules.

Physical Ability:  Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, and involving stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials.  Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.

 Sensory Requirements:  Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds.  Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths.  Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.

 Environmental Factors:  Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as various weather conditions, dust, odors, wetness, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, bright/dim light, traffic hazards, and/or toxic/poisonous agents.
